What the collections explain

What the collections explain

“Nessebar Through the Ages,” the permanent exhibition, follows the history of ancient Messambria and medieval Nessebar through four halls.

The halls are titled “Mesembria and the Thracians,” “The Pontic Polis Mesambria,” “Mesembria within the Borders of Rome, Byzantium, and Bulgaria,” and the Icon Hall. Together, they give the exhibition a chronological frame, from Thracian-era material through the town’s later history.

Objects on display include Thracian stone anchors and stocks, funerary stone sculpture, Greek black-figured pottery, gold ornaments and medieval sgraffito pottery. In the lobby, a diploma marks Old Nessebar’s inscription on the World Heritage List. The inscription took place on December 9, 1983, during the World Heritage Committee’s seventh session in Florence, Italy.
